Programmi di CAD e FEM sotto Linux
Uno dei settori in cui Linux è ancora indietro rispetto ai sistemi commerciali è quello dei software tenici per applicazioni di architettura e meccanica, come i software per il disegno CAD, sia 2D che 3D, oppure gli analizzatori ad elementi finiti (FEM). Nel primo ambito esiste il QCAD e poco altro, nel secondo caso è probabile che si trovino dei risolutori per singoli specifici problemi, anche OpenSource, ma, a parte il porting di alcuni software commerciali non ci sono grossi progetti liberi. Visto anche l'interesse che, per lavoro, alcuni del gruppo hanno in questo genere di applicazioni l'idea è di aprire un progetto per la documentazione di ciò che esiste sull'argomento. Gli obiettivi sarebbero:
- Cercare e catalogare quanto disponibile in ambito OpenSource
- Provare e recensire i software
- research papers
- Mettere in rete la documentazione raccolta
- Esplorare la possibilità di riunire in un'unica "distribuzione" software che svolgono funzioni affini, tipo un visualizzatore di file CAD 3D (tipo IGES), un generatore di mesh, dei risolutori e un visualizzatore per il post-processing. Quest'ultimo passaggio è piuttosto ambizioso e potrebbe essere fuori della nostra portata (o voglia), ma lo si vedrà strada facendo.
